    Kick-Off Site Meeting

In today’s blog post I wanna share my experience on kick-off site/construction meeting since I have been to a few ranging from small to large scale projects.  Currently I am working on a redevelopment hospital project in Hong Kong. There was a lot of preparatory work before foundation work and superstructure could begin, that included Ground investigation works, decanting and A&A works. I thought it would be useful for anyone working on a public project and about to prepare to go on a kick-off meeting.

For me, I find it useful to prepare a short presentation ( kick-off checklist) to chair the meeting. Read more

    M+ Museum Visit

Seeded in the late 1990s, and further conceptualized in the late 2000s, M+ is one component of the master plan for the West Kowloon Cultural District; some of the cultural venues are still under construction and some have been completed! Yes I am talking about the recent M+ Museum completion!  M+ Museum is one the places in Hong Kong I have book-marked it for a visit ever since I knew Herzog & de Meuron partnering with TEP Farrells won the competition to design a key venue in creating interdisciplinary exchange between the visual arts and the performing arts in Asia. I visited during the opening week and finally had time to sit down and share with you all my experience.

    2019 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture (Shenzhen)

The 2019 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture (Shenzhen) is officially open!

The exhibition consists of two sections, namely “Eyes of the City” and “ Ascending City”, which explores the evolving relationship between urban space and technological innovation from different perspectives. The exhibition is at the Futian High-Speed Railway Station and Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning. Selected by the UABB organizing committees as the main venue for the “ Eyes of the City” section, the Futian High-Speed Railway station might seem at first like a challenging location for a Biennale exhibition. It represents one of China’s leading mobility hubs and it is part of one of the world’s most extensive underground spaces. The exhibition reacts to this unusual setting by pursuing a design strategy that aims to attract an audience not necessarily accustomed – or even interested – in visiting a Biennale about urbanism and architecture. By mimicking the flamboyant visual language of duty-free shops ( developed by the Dutch graphic designer Mieke Gerrotzem), the exhibition aims to expose station users to the ambiguity of “Eyes of the City” scenarios. The station becomes a space where visitors cannot escapes the exhibited works – and where functions and experienced get hybridized. Read more

Through the processed eyes of satellite imageries: Sensing Cities

Contemporary technologies are products of human demands. They are not external elements independent of societies. Through the data they collect and generate, we are able to observe our behaviours and develop better understanding of ourselves. In this age of the Self, cameras and sensors are no long pointed to others but are directed back to us in multiple perspectives.

As architects, we see the emerging technological capabilities as powerful tools to improve feedback research and future urban policy making. We are deeply interested in how cities have evolved through the extended eyes of remote sensing technologies. Read more
