Two years ago, i wrote a blog post ” Becoming an Architect – My RIBA Part 3 Exam Experience”, in which I received many comments and emails regarding questions on Part 3 case study, PEDRs, interview questions and many more. One of the most popular questions I was being asked all the time was the Part 3 reading list. So I  put together a full list here and divided them into the following 12 categories:

    a. Architect Contract; b. Building Contract; c. Building Regulations; d. Code  of Conducts; e. Design and Legislation; f. Dispute Resolution; g. Health and Safety; h. Law and Act; i. Practice Management; j. Project Management;  k. Planning; l. Others

    Accelerating Creativity: Creating What Matters

Half a year ago, I participated in a few videos with Design Trust in Hong Kong and New York. The videos documented 1 year of our work by Muilo and Design Trust as well as editing. It contained team works from the very beginning of the brainstorming session to concept presentation, New York study trip, detail design stage liaising with the locals to different public consultations. The video that is going up on the SOGO screen, in particular, is promoting Design Trust and hoping to invite more young designers to join. One of the reasons I joined Design Trust was because it provided a lot of opportunities to get feedback on my design from peers, ideas of exchange and be able to work with different other designers. I would say it is very much like working back in school studio, ie student created a piece of work, and present to a group, that are often professionals from other disciplines for feedback.

On the Grid – New York Trip

While not my first time in State, it was my first time in Manhattan, despite my exaggerated image of cloud piercing old skyscrapers; it was quite the contrary. The Manhattan I found, was bustling with new architecture mixing the old , the city is constantly reinventing itself.

New York geographically layout makes a complex space immediately navigable. Manhattan invites long walks, because walkers can judge distance easily and always know where they are. This is particular useful say you are on 50th Street and 6th Avenue and need to go to 30th Street and 2nd Avenue, you have about 1 mile to walk south and 1 mile to walk east. This helps a lot when judging whether or not a subway ride is worth it.

The city is rich in culture doesn’t happen overnight. It is the result of centuries of migrations, polices, protests and practices of people that value culture, heritage and expression. From world famous productions on proscenium stages to longstanding drumming circles in City parks, New York is home to an unparalleled variety of artistic activities that give New York’s a sense of belonging amid a dense, impersonal urban enclave, provide space of people to engage in civic action.  The 5-day trip in New York has been inspiring.
