Through the processed eyes of satellite imageries: Sensing Cities

Contemporary technologies are products of human demands. They are not external elements independent of societies. Through the data they collect and generate, we are able to observe our behaviours and develop better understanding of ourselves. In this age of the Self, cameras and sensors are no long pointed to others but are directed back to us in multiple perspectives.

As architects, we see the emerging technological capabilities as powerful tools to improve feedback research and future urban policy making. We are deeply interested in how cities have evolved through the extended eyes of remote sensing technologies.

The proposed exhibition materials contain a series of territorial satellite analysis, depicting three deceades of realized urban expansion of Pearl River Delta: from the open up in 1980s to 2018. The urban growth is a combination of planned constructions are market-led developments. Through the processed eyes of satellite imageries, the public can study their cities on a different scale. The analysis will provide effective data on actual ground happenings to better assist audience’s identification of development hotspots, arriving at potential improvements to existing urban policies to cope with the sensed realities beyond the administrative boundaries future of a better intergrated Greater Bay.

Nicole and I are delighted to let you know we are putting the above research would be exhibiting in the UABB Shenzhen 2019 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture. The research itself is on-onging, but the selected works have been working with the curatorial team since August and the opening is this weekend! While total 14 drawings would be exhibiting at Futian, Shenzhen, Nicole and i will be hosting  5 round table discussions on the following topics:

1. On City Sensing: Plan, Detect, Analyze, Plan Again

This round table discussion aims to look at the current planning systems in Pearl River Delta with selected cities such as Beijing, Shezhen, Hong Kong and Macau. The planning and citizen feedback process differs in each city, based upon the particular urban governance and institutional framework. Therefore, a process to understand how inclusive technologies can be linked into existing planning and feedback systems and structure is the core of the discussion.

2. On Design Technologies: Remote Sensing and Data Processing

This round table discussion begins with the fundamental use of the remote sensing and data processing which help the audience to understand the use of application. It’s not limited to satellite and airborne images that are used as mapping tools, but we would also invite practicing researcher to demonstrate how it has been used as an urban monitoring and how this tool been used as remote sensing data analysis on economical and environmental issues.

3. On Shifting Relationship: Urban Dwellers and Built Environment

This is a marathon sharing session; guests are invited from different backgrounds to share their own city stories and the tales. Each guest would present 1 photo taken of their own and less than 10 mins sharing.

4. On Urban Strategy: Comparing Past and the Future

This round table discussion concentrate on urban strategy by comparing the past, present and looking into the future. Guests will share what made historic cities great and looking to the future, ruminating on how emerging technologies will or how technologies shouldn’t impact our traditional urban designs. The topics ranged from the future of public space and infrastructure to housing and transport, from the nature of planning and governance to energy and security.

5. On Collaboration: Integrating City Clusters within PRD

In its 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020), China has asserted great importance to the concept of city clusters as a new kind or urban development. At the centre of each city cluster will be a mega-city, which will mobilize and galvanize the development of smaller neighbouring cities, as well as facilitate regional economic development.

Shenzhen for example are one of economic engines of city clusters as well as the key city to achieve balanced development in terms of liability and sustainability.

In this round table discussion, we have invited urban planners, architects to presented recent completed projects in Zhuhai, Guangzhou, Qianhai in Shenzhen, Kowloon in Hong Kong, as well as their reading of the city and understanding of integrating city clusters within PRD. Exact dates of the round table discussions would be found at the Biennale venue.
