It is very easy to get overwhelmed with floor tiles, kitchenware when you landed in one of the most hectic busy roads in Wan Chai in Hong Kong. There is a shop currently standing out from the crowd that worth a visit.
“ The colour Living x Alan Chan show”.
“New concept of luxury lifestyle” was stamped on the invitation. My first reaction was what an ambitious brief as someone would argue technically nothing could be new to form a new concept. In order to be called a new concept needs to be quite radical, I re-read the line and leads me thinking the definition of luxury lifestyle and I start to question what has happened to luxury within architecture. From ancient to contemporary, the use of material excess within architectural practice reveals not only that luxury can have an architectural dimension, but also that it can be used to interpret lifestyle. Luxury within architecture today is often understood as having a material existence; it can also denote spaces, approaches to designing devices. To me, luxury within architecture is about celebrating overindulgence in distinct contexts. It increases the standard of living but also through the creation – it forms an imitable identity. I was pondering on my way and have arrived at the housewarming party.
The address is 333 Lockhart Road to be exact, it is quite difficult to miss the store, as there are loads of parametric models on the ground floor level. The gallery space begins on the third floor where the escalator will take you up to a 1600 sq ft featuring so-called a mixed lifestyle items. They are ranging from small products such as pots, candles to vintage ornaments. There are quite a few peculiar items would surprise you. One of the items that caught my eyes were the artificial skylight – named Coelux® 60 if you have never seen, I have once thought it was designed by the artist James Turrell but it wasn’t. In the opening speech, Alan said colour living it’s a very special project. It is a project he curated with Denise Lau attempt to define contemporary luxurious lifestyle in the world of culture and art.
The team gives their definition through curating the lifestyle items in the gallery-style home operate through the medium of the interior space – home. The guests mobilizing from the dining area to the living area during the night, the housewarming party created a relaxing environment with the music band in the background. The selection of work inside this gallery-style home might not be your cup of tea, but it will definitely give you some inspiration.
Check it out if you have time and let me know your thoughts.
